Sport in the National Park

Information concerning sport facilities in the National Park

Sport and unimpaired nature go well together. In the National Park you can go hiking, horse-riding, skiing and mountain cycling. Whatever you do, please protect our plants and animals, be aware of other visitors and stay on the official routes. Keeping these few guidelines in mind, you will have a lot of fun doing sport.

For walkers and riders

Hikers and walkers will do just fine in the Park. They will find a well signposted route system and can explore almost the entire park. Horse-riding is only allowed on those routes marked accordingly.

For those on mountain bikes

On most of the National Park's route you can go cycling and mountain cycling at your own risk. Routes that are used by too many hikers are closed for cyclists. Please pay attention to the signs.
However, there are very interesting mountain bike routes, e.g. the Volksbank Arena Harz routes. They are easily recognisable by the cyclist pictograms. Please make sure that you and your bike are in best condition since you are going to be riding in the mountains. Please always keep in mind that hikers take priority in any case! Dead wood may be lying around as dying trees are also a part of the wilderness. Please make sure you leave the forest if you see approaching storms.
By the way: many cross-country ski trails are prepared when it snows. These cross-country ski trails are closed for cyclists.

On boards and runners

When there is a decent amount of snow you can find 140 kilometres of prepared tracks and 29 kilometres of un-prepared tracks for cross-country skiing. In Sonnenberg, four ski hills with lifts await you. You can also find one in Torfhaus. Sledge riders can race down the hills in Torfhaus, Sonnenberg and at Molkenhauschaussee near Bad Harzburg.
People who are more at ease on their feet can try the prepared winter hiking trails, which are also passable even if there is a lot of snow.

Take a look at winter sports conditions on the website "Harz Schneebericht" (in German).
